Assistance - a guide to the use of chemical products
CEMI provides advice to help you manage your swimming pool in the best possible way and avoid common problems.
Below are some of the most frequent problems linked to swimming pool water and their solutions.

Organic pollution
A large number of swimmers in a pool where water – even though it recirculates quickly – does not have sufficient contact with oxygen in the air to purify itself, gives rise to polluting organic substances that first need to be kept under control and then eliminated. The pollution can be controlled by maintaining an adequate concentration of free chlorine in the pool that combats pollution as it occurs. Chlorine-derived compounds that form are then removed through filtration in the recirculation phase and eliminated by draining away some of the water and substituting it with fresh water.

Growth of Bacteria
Bacterial flora must be combated through chemical treatment as, regardless of swimmers, the pool will have a proliferation of bacteria that multiply as the water temperature rises.
The number of bacteria is increased by the continual immersion of swimmers who transmit new colonies from the surrounding ground and air.

Irritation of the Eyes and Mucus Membranes
Treatments with chlorine or with chlorine-based products and their combination of oxidisable organic substances, produce an alkaline pH that must be controlled and neutralised to avoid irritation to the eyes and mucous membranes.

Turbidity
A pool of turbid water does not look inviting and shows how filtering is even more important than other treatments. Many things can cause turbidity: dust raised by the wind, precipitations of calcium and magnesium due to the rising temperature of water or an increase in the pH level, rusty water, algae, fungi or colloidal formations. Turbidity can only be removed by using a recirculating filter system that removes both large substances and colloidal formations, together with chlorine residue, etc.

Algae and Fungi
The formation of algae and fungi is a combination of water, light, alkalinity and temperature. The light causes photosynthesis, which increases the algae spores that fall into the water from the air, where they often find an alkaline environment that together with the temperature helps them develop.
It is better to stop algae forming, using an effective preventative treatment, rather than eliminating them after they have formed, as this is difficult. This treatment is carried out with specific anti-algae products.

Unpleasant Colour and Odours
Pool water should not only be clear but should also have a pleasant smell. Too much chlorine gives a pungent odour that we all recognise. The colour of the water is a result of its turbidity but, sometimes, it can be affected by the presence of volatile hydrocarbons that turn it golden yellow.
Specific chemical treatments also exist for this rare occurrence.
